IF THERE'S A COMPANY that typifies adventurous empowerment investing that company has to be AltX-listed Vunani. In particular, Vunani has major exposure as an anchor or significant minority empowerment investor to an array of infrastructure aligned contenders, including Illiad, PSV, Brikor, Esor, BSI, TWP and Interwaste.

You'd imagine Vunani's investment portfolio - which also includes a stake in platinum exploration counter Wesizwe - to be severely bruised these days. CEO Ethan Dube concedes Vunani's empowerment investments haven't been immune to the global economic malaise. "But we're long-term investors and what's important for us is that we're largely happy with the underlying businesses and their performance," says Dube.

Dube stresses Vunani isn't worried about any of its investments at the moment. Asked about the risks inherent in the group's large exposure to the construction/building sector, Dube says Government has committed a large amount of capital to infrastructure investment. "We expect that investment will continue to take place and believe the long-term outlook for construction and building remains positive."

And it's not as if Vunani is "watching and waiting" for prospects to improve in the building and construction sector. Dube stresses Vunani is always looking at investment opportunities. "Current market conditions and valuations do present some interesting opportunities for Vunani. A good example is our recent subscription for 40% of the issued share capital of Cavils 2000 Holdings with Base's infrastructure equities division."

Dube adds Vunani also has wide interests throughout financial services on top of its empowerment investments, which offset the impact of the current slowdown.

But somewhat tellingly, he discloses: "With respect to empowerment we're not satisfied with the developments so far and we aim to continue to be active participants in that area."
